Name changed by deed poll and marriage question

I am just thinking ahead and wondering about this.

My DD changed her surname by deed poll some years ago. If she ever gets married, which name would have to be on the marriage certificate, her birth name or her used name?

Thanks

  • Hi

I changed my surname only by deed poll years and years ago.

From memory, both the 'born' and 'current' names went on the marriage certificate, much to my annoyance.

    Stuatt is right.

I attended the register office last year to register the upcoming marriage with my entire 'name trail' - birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce certificate, deed poll - and then proof of who I now was and where I lived etc.

And they said I could pick any name for my upcoming marriage certificate - my birth name, my married one or my deed poll one, or all three! It depended on what I would like.

I chose my current one, because all those bank accounts etc aren't going to change themselves, and back tracking would have complicated things I think - it's hard enough from this to that with a certificate, without 'yes, I know the certificate says something different but I USED to be called that'..........

    So, she can please herself.
  • I got married in december (church wedding just incase it makes any difference)- I changed my name by deed poll when I was 13 to my step dads surname

On my marriage certificate I was allowed to have my surname as my surname that I have had since I was 13 with no mention of my birth name, I also had my step dads details down instead of my fathers (which you can do if your parent and step parent are married)

for the purpose of the family tree etc, my name is changed legally by deed poll so whoever is researching would find that and that would link them back to my birth certificate with my birth details if thats what they were looking for.

The same details are also on my sons birth certificate

  • Thank you.

I wonder if things have changed in recent years. Only when I remarried in 2000, I HAD to have my first married name on mine even though I had reverted to and been using my maiden name for a few years.

No idea - but I know I got to choose.
  • I was married in November and was given the same option as depressed. I took my step-fathers name when I was 6 and even though he died when I was 14 I was allowed to have him as my father on my marriage certificate which I was very happy with. The registrar who I gave my notice to said this had changed under the last Labour government (she had been in a similar position to me but before the law change so she had to have her birth fathers name on the certificate). You still have to have your fathers name on the marriage certificate- this hasn't been updated to either parent yet (I had wanted my mum on there but that wasn't allowed).

Oh god, I hadn't even thought about the fathers name on the cert. I don't suppose she will like that very much.

    These are the options -

Q: Does my natural father's name have to appear in the marriage register?
Normally, the natural father's name should appear in the register.

Where a person has been legally adopted, his or her adoptive father's name may be entered without qualification. But if the party to the marriage is known by a surname different from that of his or her adoptive father, and the name and surname of the adoptive father are entered in column 7 of the register, then the words "adoptive parent" may be entered in brackets after the surname, if this is desired by the party.

But occasionally one of the parties to a marriage may not wish his or her father's name to appear, for example, if he or she has never known his or her natural father, or has been brought up by a step-father. In such case the minister should not insist on the natural parent's name being entered, but should draw a line through the columns relating to the father's names and profession, to show that the information was not supplied.

However, since the coming into force of the Registration of Marriages (Amendment) Regulations 2007, it has been permissible to record a step-father's name, instead of the natural father's name, provided that the step-father is, or has been, married to the mother. Where a step-father's name is entered, the word "step-father" should be entered after the surname.
