best airline for free checked luggage allowance?

Hi

Flying to LAX in July for a wedding in California.

Most airlines I have looked at tend to offer 23KG checked luggage and 1 piece of 5KG hand luggage. Being a wedding and all I do have a lot of baggage and was wondering if its worth me looking at other airlines who may offer slightly better KGs for checked and hand luggage?

I think most are pretty standard on this, I am aware I can pay extra to check in a second bag for approx £50-£100 but was wondering if there are certainly airlines in Economy who offer more as part of the price of the ticket?

I also know if I booked a premium economy ticket most airlines lets you check a second bag as part of the cost, but the prices are too dear for me so can't really look at the option, especially as I am going to Cali at peak time (July 2013) and prices for tickets are already at the maximum price.

If anyone has any suggestions it would be most appreciated. I think I know what the answer is and there probably all the same but thought I would ask the question before I book.

Thanks

  • Just had a look, all airlines on the route offer 23KG standard, unless you're upgrading to premium economy.

BA have an unlimited hand baggage allowance subject to size so that may help

BA has a weight limit of 23kg bag-limit for hand luggage so not quite unlimited but generous to be sure.

Yes I knew that, just left it open for you to come along and put me right.

With the size of bag allowed as hand baggage, very few people would be able to get it to weigh 23kg

So why not just provide the correct information?

Try phoning some travel agents and tell them you want an extra luggage allowance. They seem to get deals with the airlines that you don't get online, where an additional allowance is included. I know for example that with Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong (wrong direction for you, but just an example), you can get 30Kg where the airline shows an allowance of 20.

Sorry, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to know who you are? I care that posters asking for advice aren't given incorrect one. If you don't then it might be more helpful for everyone if you didn't chime in.

With most airlines such as BA and AA you can check in 23kg, carry on a small suitcase and then have a 'personal item' too i.e a handbag.

So if you took your wedding outfit in the suitcase to ensure it didnt get lost, with shoes etc, youd still have an entire suitcase to fill in the hold, plus another bag to take on board with stuff for the plane etc.
  • You don't need all that cr*p, just leave it at home.
