Hi,

My car is at the garage for some repairs (private work not insurance work - somebody damaged the car and drove off whilst I was at work so I don't know who so decided to to do it privately than claim on my insurance)

They gave me a courtesy car but as it is a private job said I need to phone my insurance company and get it insured for the week.

Is it better to call my insurance company and get this done or buy one of those 7 day car insurance policies? like: https://broker.tempcover.com/

  • Does your insurance have any other car drive on it, if so just notify your insurnace and you should be insured.

    Probably be cheaper to get your own insurers to cover it. Normally they can simply transfer cover to the courtesy car (obviously they will need the details of it) from yours as yours will be covered by the garages insurance whilst it is with them.

    BTW, You should inform your insurers in any event depending on the t & c's of your policy.

    If you are with LV then the courtesy car will have the same cover as your own car, just give them a bell to tell them you have it.

    Every courtesy car I've ever had (not many) has been covered by the garage insurance.

    If this one isn't then as you are getting a private job done rather than telling your insurer I'd be inclined to keep them completely out of it and get temp insurance from elsewhere

    Thats usually only correct if they provide the car or the garage provide it as part of a claim process. The OP would need to ask for the same cover to apply to a temp car (or has been said, get temp cover elsewhere).

    My certificate of insurance (LV) states.....
    Vehicle covered
    1.a {my Reg}
    1.b Any motor car which is loaned or hired to the Policyholder under the Insurer's Motor Damage Claim Servicer or by a member of the Motor Trade while the vehicle specified above is in the custody of the Motor Trader for service, repair or MOT
