I was browsing for avenues where she could be involved with this, I thought the Guides did this but it seems only in England, not in Scotland?

When I did it, local youth clubs were also involved.

Army and air cadets do this. You can do the expedition parts independantly with an approved providor, my dd is doing her silver at the mo, via the school but on horse back via an approved providor for the expedition. So you only need to find someone who runs d of e to get them to sign off the volunteering, sports etc sections and organise the expeditions seperately, detials ar eon the d of 3 site of providers by regions.

  • Add Sea Cadets to the list as well.

Don't know how far away from any unis you will be, and I appreciate the age difference, but they may have a society for those wanting to do DofE that may be able to help with the expedition aspect.

Has your daughter started the DofE yet? Just wondering if she hasn't it might be worth seeing if other students in her new school would be interested getting involved ?

It's up to individual packs to do DofE so your local one might not. Our community centre runs DofE and some schools join up to offer the award.

if local school isn't an option, check out local youth clubs and youth organisations. Although you will probably still have to pay, it will be much cheaper than what you would pay to a private company. Assuming it is organised in a similar way 'oop north' to how it works here, your local LEA should employ someone who is responsibly for signing off the award, so if you could get in touch with them they in turn ought to be able to advise you about groups in your area.

I help run DofE at my school. Despite the fact that developing outdoor education is part of our school improvement plan, we get b*gger all support from senior staff. We used to offer all three levels of the award. Now we can only (just) get enough support to offer the gold level, and even that is with staff giving up their time after school and on weekends to run training sessions. For bronze, we've had to bring in a private company to run it at a cost of £95 a head, because the school won't release staff from timetable to run the expeditions. Silver has stopped completely. Despite all the frustrations caused by the lack of support, it is hands down one of the best parts of my job. The kids get so much out of it. It is a real shame that there isn't more support for it across the board. Hope you can find a local provider.

I know what you mean ....I live not in not the most affulent area as well and am so frustrated that people, including children, see this as justfication to almost wallow in a 'woe is me' attittude.

What I meant was if only 3 people were interested, would the school be interested in doing it as you never know where that spark in others....or have I been watching too many disney films?
