I have an Excel spreadsheet which I cannot rename: when right clicking on the tab at the bottom all oprions except "Select all sheets" and "View code" are greyed out. If I go to format/sheet, everything except Backgroound is greyed out. Any suggestions?

Could be protected - look in Tools/Protection - if the first option is "protect sheet" it's not that (should be "unprotect sheet")0

Or try Save As... something else.

It is because the workbook is protected, Tools, Protection, Unprotect Workbook. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Thanks for the replies.
The protected workbook business seems to fit the bill but when I try that I am asked for a password - I have never used a password, hitting the return leaving the password blank doesn't work. This problem is not critical as I can still use the spreadsheet, it's just annoying.0 -
PC wizard coudl be an option but I'm positive I've never been asked - or supplied a password for Excel before. As I said this is an annoyance rather than critical I'm sure there must be a simple explanation.
I've tried "save as " but no difference.0 -
If it's not one you've written yourself, the author will have protected it.0

It's my own0

Weird... only way you can set a password is with Tools/Protection/Protect.. even then you'd have to type something in, then repeat it in the confirmation pop-up (try it on a new blank spreadsheet and you'll see what I mean).
The file could have become corrupted in some way I suppose - I'd try the pcwizard and see if it comes up with anything you recognise (and later do a virus-scan on the PC just to be sure).0 -
If you ensure the file is closed, can't you change the name in Windows Explorer?0

OK I've downloaded pcwizard but where do I find passwords?0
