When to plant strawberries outside.

I've bought some Elsanta and Cambridge strawberry plants but it doesn't say on the bumph when to put them outside. Does anyone know when to plant these out in the garden please?

More frost/snow expected from what a few people have said.

    How sheletered will they be?

I have a variety called Sophie, They are brilliant. I never cover them or anything and they thrive no matter how cold it gets.

Even rooted some in pots last year and forgot about them, They should have frozen solid with the cold weather and snow yet they are still alive.

Couple of weeks yet though for yours maybe. Unless you can provide a good covering for the soil and partially over the leaves also.

  • I was kindly given about 50 plants on freecycle in a carrier bag but forgot all about them until last week! They had been sitting in this bag for more than a month oops. I planted them out last week and they look pretty good considering the bashing they've had.

many thanks for that. my two are elsanta and cambridge. they only cost a pound for two plants in a bag from poundland but it doesn't actually say on the bumph when to plant them out (!!). haven't grown them before so wasn't sure. from your post i think i'll leave planying out until the frost has gone. must also look up the sophie variety too as from what you say even i can't mess that one up!! :)
  • My strawberries had babies which I overwintered in an empty bit of garden. I relocated them on Saturday to their permanent position thinking spring was just around the corner. Now I hear we are getting more snow on Wednesday so I just hope I dont lose them all if they havent settled after moving. I wish Id waited a few weeks....

I want some of those massive strawberries they had on the TV, Show was about buying home in UK or Australia. Huge strawberries would have convinced me right away.

Wonder how they do with beetroot. Thats dinner a pudding done for life.. I could eat that every day.

  • Not sure what mine are but they've been left outside in a hanging basket and are fine! Put them in the ground at the weekend, under a large tree so fingers crossed. They just seemed to thrive considering the awful weather we've had.

Dugsy, i got the same ones from poundland (actually 8 plants in each pack - 4 in each side). I planted the one pack into large pots in the greenhouse, and am hoping for the best. No idea whether i've done the right thing or not!

Do you think the other's will be ok left in the pack for a few weeks?

Strawberries are pretty hardy beasts but if they have been kept indoors a sudden change may check their growth a bit. In pots in a greenhouse should be fine so they don't have to cope with the worst of the weather, then out in say March when things are a little milder.

TBH I am a bit of a tough love fan and so they would be straight out in the beds here, with an option for covering them if snow is predicted (its rare here tho, we had none in the recent blast at end of feb, and just a few days in Jan) plus it has been gorgeous and sunny here for the last few days.
