Bank paid less than given, help?

Hi. Probably not the place to put this, but I'm not seeing where to put it, so here it goes.

Helped out a friend earlier today and paid money into his account (gave cash and his card to the bank). Didn't notice that the receipt is only for about £100, when it should be around £800. How does it stand to get them to fix this? He needs to make a payment from his account on Monday, and I work the other side of town and don't know if I'll be able to escape for long enough to talk to the bank myself; he thinks that as I paid the money in, it'll be me they want to talk to, not him. Does anyone have any ideas over this? I'm seeing him tomorrow, and we'd think that they notice a £800 descrepency, but don't know what else will happen.

Thanks.

The bank will notice a £700 descrepency so don't panic. It sounds like a simple keying error so when they go through their transaction slips, its likely they will find the error and the rest of the money will be credited.

Best to phone the bank and let them know the error. As it's his account, then he can phone, give his account details and let them know what happened.

  • Thanks for that. I didn't actually fill in any slips, just gave them his card and the cash, but hopefully you're right and he'll be able to sort it himself. If not, would the bank allow me to talk to the people at the branch if they phoned me, and would that be enough?

Well no the bank may not notice that they paid in the wrong amount. They'll only notice if they put a detailed breakdown on their slip. But like lippy said they will notice a £700 discrepancy at the end of the day. A quick phone call either by you or the account holder to tell them that you expected to pay in £800 not £100 will solve the problem.

Yes the account holder should be able to sort the problem out himself. But if not you can phone them to explain how you made a payment of £800 but the account holder only received £100 and they should be able to sort it out. They obviously can't give you any further information.
