New kitchen - shaker or gloss

We're in the process of redoing our 1960s kitchen and we're torn between white/cream shaker style or gloss. I like both but am worried the gloss would date very quickly. In our previous place we had a shaker style and i hated the fact that dirt seemed to collect in all the edges. If anyone's got a gloss kitchen, are there any drawbacks?

Thanks

I don't think there are any drawbacks. Mine's white, wipes over easily, looks great when the kids haven't been on a rampage. A matter of taste though really.

I had shaker style in my previous home and it was a pain, as you said the dirt and dust gets into all the grooves.....

I have a shaker, put in a couple of years ago, its lovely but because the worktops are a matt finish I really, really wish I had got gloss shaker now. It was about 25% more expensive which is what made me choose matt, but I wish I had bitten the bullet.

It wont look bad if you have glossy work tops and matt doors but if you have matt worktops you really are better with gloss doors.

And to be honest, glossy worktops are just the pits for keeping clean and presentable.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I have matt worktops and doors and it looks fine. I complemented this with gloss tiles and lights under the cupboards to make the tiles shine more. I can supply photos if required. It is still new (done 6 months ago).

Just wondering why glossy worktops are difficult to keep clean. I always thought everything would just wipe off easily.

Also hadn't even thought about having contrast between doors, worktop and tiles! Too many choices!!
  • You can always change the doors if you hate it down the line.

I have cream gloss cupboard doors and dark brown sparkly gloss worktop with upstands, no wall tiles, stainless steel spashback behind the hob, lights under the wall cupboards.

The doors and worktop both wipe down really easily using just warm water and a microfibre cloth, even grease marks come off. Depends on how careful you are, but you might find that gloss worktops scratch more easily than matt.

I had shaker style before, and hated cleaning out all the nooks and crannies.
