    Tough but fair.

That probably covers a multitude of sins.

I prefer someone that lays things out in black and white so I know where I am and what I need to do. But its a very fine line.

    Hello all!

I was just wondering what you felt made a 'good manager'.

For me, I have very basic requirements:

    1. To be treated with respect
    2. To be approachable
    3. To provide constructive criticism to help me learn my role better and progress my career

    What about you?
Someone who can teach you something not the other way round. Someone who actually manages the team and not make a team member do all the magaging and training. Someone who will listen to advice from the team and someone who is fair.

I dunno, I believe a manager should be someone who is happy to learn from their staff and vice versa.

Interesting that most of the replies refer to the type that people would like to have managing them. You do have to bear in mind that the manager is paid by the employer though.

not if they are on £10k and ask you as a staff member to do their job, your own too and teach everyone else how to do stuff. These people are managers in name only.

ah ok, I was thinking more on a mutual exchange. Listening to ideas and strategies. Not being afraid to get input from staff to make an informed decision.

    I get you now.

  • Eh, if your Number One priority is being treated with respect, you're going to have to earn it first. Respect does not come automatically with the title of "Manager". Expecting it purely as a result of your job-title will probably mean you'll get none.

Treat everyone who reports to you equally and with respect.

Be prepared to get your hands dirty and lead from the front.
