Hello all!
I was just wondering what you felt made a 'good manager'.
For me, I have very basic requirements:
1. To be treated with respect
2. To be approachable
3. To provide constructive criticism to help me learn my role better and progress my career

Someone that listens, and don't think they are the top of the world. My current manager thinks this way and everyone hates her.0

I am more of a follower then a leader so for me as a follower a manager should
1) lead by example, for instance if you work in a call centre and you are busy with staff off sick to help out at taking the incoming calls and not sit at a desk compiling statistics
2) Treat everyone the same
3) The abiltiy to motivate staff so that you actually want to work under them. This is something that from experience comes naturally and it is something that no amount of training cannot provide.
BTW OP, Did you manage to fill that vacancy at your company mentioned in a previous post. You remember it was the one where you said that you had 8 people confirmed for interviews and only one of them turned up.:D0 -

A good manager cares more about the careers of those that report to him/her than their own.
This golden rule will ensure success for the manager.
Never did me any harm.

Transparency, and engendering an atmosphere of trust, so that people know you will treat them fairly and reliably, and look to learn from mistakes (their own and yours!) rather than impose maximum penalties.Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0

Someone with the ability to listen and solve problems that arise in a sincere and fair way. Someone who does not take sides. To treat all staff fairly, and if you respect your staff they will respect you.
None of this applies to my manager who has no people skill at all.:mad::mad:0 -

managers have 2 main roles - to protect/promote the business (whi8ch usually means keeping their managers happy) and keep the staff happy, a difficult balancing act.
1. Communication - clear, have notice boards, newsletters (if team is big enough)
2. Clear rules or expectations of how staff will behave, what happens if they don't, and what happens if they do.
3. Clear instructions about how the work is to be done - staff like to know what they are meant to do, methods, standards, targets, deadlines etc
4. Choose your battles - let them get away with small things occasionally so they think they've "won", save your managerial powers for when they are really needed
5 get the teas in occasionally
6. respect staff but let them know you won't stand for any nonsense, make them respect you too
7. You need to be confident, assertive. Don't sit on the fence, you are their boss so you can't be one of them - they won't like it.
8. have a rolling training programme, don't let staff stay in one role for too long, move them around a bit
