Do i need to underlay my new veg patch?
Hi all,
I've recently moved in to a new house, and am working on turning the garden border into a veg patch - approx 2m long by 50cm wide. I think i know how to go about conditioning the soil etc.... but was wondering whether i need to dig down a foot or so and put down a layer of cardboard/plastic? I think i've seen people do this before, to keep pests out, but am not sure if it's necessary. I plan to grow fairly shallow rooted plants, for the most part.
Any advice appreciated - I'm totally new to this!
Thanks,
Gill

no.
I have heard on putting plastic/cardboard on top of the soil to keep down weeds but never a foot under the soil.0 -
Guessing the OP was confused with a runner bean trench . ( cardboard)
But Plastic ?????????0 -
I think i saw someone do this with a raised veg patch once, but sounds like it's not necessary!
Thanks both.
