Hi,

my netbook seems to have well and truly kicked the bucket :(

I've tried everything (well what i could find online) but nothing works. the error message I'm getting is :

unmountable_boot_volume

*** STOP: 0x000000ED (0x865517D0, 0xc0000185, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I disabled Boot booster in the BIOS menu and then repeatedly pressed F9 (which has worked in the past) but this time = FAIL.

Can anyone help? The netbook is making a weird sound and has been for quite a while. Is it possible some part inside has failed?

What sort of 'weird sound'? A clicking hard drive?

What was the weird sound it was making, was it a clicking/ticking noise or similar? The error message means the machine has not been able to boot from the hard drive which may mean it's failed which isn't unusual. Some hard drives will make odd noises as they're failing although some may work fine and then just completely die the next day.

What make and model is the netbook? If the internal drive is removable I'd get it out of the netbook, buy a cheap USB to SATA adapter and connect the drive to another PC. If the drive appears you can browse it to back up your data and then try running some diagnostics to see if the disk is responding ok. If the drive won't mount at all then it is likely dead which will mean you'll need to buy another to revive the Netbook and reinstall the operating system, the difficulty of that will depend on whether you made any recovery discs or not for the netbook.
