Typing test

I had an interview yesterday for my dream job.

Got taken by suprise with a typing test which went very badly. 36wpm min with 7 mistakes. I put on false nails the night before so that did me no favours.

It was for admin/receptionist within a secure unit for mentally ill children. The interview went well and I impressed them with what I knew and the fact my partner has aspergers but just can't help but think I've blown it with the typing test :(

  • Did you tell them you had false nails on? That in itself might screw the test - I would email them and ask when results will be out (or use another reason for contacting them) and say you hope the typing test, which you were not expecting, didn't affect the result too much, as you were wearing false nails to look your best for them!

I made a joke of it afterwards.

I'm just hoping with what I knew and my experience with aspergers goes in my favor. I don't typing is the main role.

I already emailed yesterday thanking them for their time and expressing how after finding out more about the role I was even more keen.

Typing isn't a big thing these days with spelling and grammer checks. I wouldn't worry too much.

Years ago when I was faster, I did one of those tests and managed 43wpm which I was pretty pleased with. I don't think I'd manage that now though as I'm back down to two fingers for most words lol. Even then it recorded everything from a wrong click on the menu to a wrong letter being typed in. I made three mistakes from memory and yet they still gave me a job!

Seriously, I wouldn't worry too much.

    Oh.. and good luck!

Typing speed these days rarely impacts on how speedily you do your job, as most people tend to format as they go which means you are not typing hell for leather to get it down as it used to be, particularly for audio typing. So, unless you are doing data entry when it's important to be fast and accurate it shouldn't matter.

However... there are some employers who get very hung up on typing speeds, so hopefully the other aspects of your interview will win you the job.

From the job description there didn't seem
To be alot of typing to be honest.

I do think other candidates will be suprised as although its reception/admin work they did ask if I had experience with those with learning disabilities and mental health.

  • Well I worked as a receptionist, I was mainly answering calls and shooting out emails. You might want to work on your typing skills some more if you are looking to go towards that career.

And when I think that I started going to typing classes, we were instructed to cut our nails if they were too long!!! :rotfl:

Seriously, I do just wonder if false nails give the 'right' impression in an admin interview?
Signature removed for peace of mind
