  • weighed in at almost 20kg so for £99 i don't think it was too bad. £4.95ish a kg which includes the bones and fat but i'm using those so not complaining.

Now has anyone got some tips on the best way to cook the belly, and what i can do with the fat and kidneys? As those are the bits i'm not sure of lol

Very good deal for £99. I went sheep shopping yesterday but nothing came of it. Later went food shopping and found British Lamb in the co-op, rolled breast (belly) so treated myself! I didn't unroll it to stuff it, although when I have this cut from the butchers I do, I leave it open and they give me some string to tie it up after.

I usually do quite a hot roast with this, 200 deg for 60-75 minutes depending on weight. Lots of fat comes out but the outside is crispy and gorgeous, the inside is tender and juicy! Mmmm

I poured off the fat, half a cup full ish, and though perhaps it would be ok for roasting spuds in? Or maybe just as a treat for the birds, warm it up and mix in some bird seed, then make fat balls...?

    :)

Hows everyone doing with their butchers? Just thought of this thread and realised nobody has posted for a while.

    Hi Lindsay

I am going to try and buy some oxtrail from the butcher's tomorrow.

The Lamb we bought just falls off the folk, and soooo full of flavour.

We have pulled one of leg of pork out of the freezer for the weekend.

Still virtually alcohol free since 4/1/15. (10 Xmas/ New Year/Birthday drinks)
It takes 3500 calories to lose a pound in weight. Target 13 lbs weight loss. 18.5lbs lost 2nd May - 28 September.

I suppose the other observation I'd make is if I want good quality bacon as I sometimes do I'll just buy a good bacon joint from Tesco's or Sainsbury's and slice it up myself.

Why would buying bacon from a Butcher's be any better than this?
because then you know it hasn't been shipped in from abroad, and has had a good standard of life before it got killed..

None of Morrison's meat in their butchery department is from abroad.

They don't hang the meat for as long as a local butcher probably would but, if you haven't got a local butcher, they're worth a try.

I went to a butcher last weekend which is on the way home from my sister's (she's in Dorset and I'm in Berkshire). I always get my bacon there as it is lovely and was £2.99 for 1lb (just gone up to £3.49 but really good value still).

He had large packs of bacon which were better value (£12 for green and £13 for smoked for 2.2kg / 5lb); also got neck of lamb (used tonight, really lovely flavour) for £3.99/lb and shin of beef for £2.99/lb plus 3lb of chicken breasts for £9.99.

Trouble is I am used to working in kg (for meat anyway - still weigh myself in stones and lbs!) so it takes a while to work out if the deal is any good! Not sure the chicken was great value - I like thighs but doing an eating plan where we are not supposed to have them!

Wish I had bought more steak mince - less than £5/kg and it is really tasty!

My local butchers are more expensive here but one I go it is organic (not the reason I go to him - he is comparable pricewise but really good quality generally).

We are currently using Costco and our local butcher.
Depending on the product you buy I have found that supermarkets are expensive for meat. Both Costco and local butcher can better the supermarkets price.(our local butcher is in a very small village)
Yes junk meat is sometimes cheaper eg. sausages, sausage rolls anything that is bulked out is often cheaper at supermarket.
Currently we buy lamb at local butchers. All other meat comes from Costco.
Reason we do not buy other products from local butchers is due too the fact that it is not any cheaper than Costco's. However I have never asked my butcher for a discount for bulk.

My local butcher is a farm shop, they sell all their own reared animals so totally traceable.
This weekend I had goat, absolutely gorgeous it was too!
If I'm not sure of any cuts, the guys are very helpful and will point me in the right direction, they are more than happy to prep things as I ask for and will try and source items for me if they don't stock it. (I had rabbit last year)
