I have subscribed to The Times & Sunday Times iPad app since the beginning. There have been a few problems along the way but nothing compared to the latest disaster The Times released on Valentines Day.

The Good
  • I like having The Times and Sunday Times in one app.
  • Some of the formatting errors I was getting in the previous version have gone.
  • It looks more like the newspaper.
  • I like having it as part of Newsstand.
  • I like being able to read it in portrait mode.

The Ugly
  • It keeps crashing.
  • It keeps freezing.
  • It is slow.
  • It is jerky.
  • I can't control how many editions of the paper I want to keep. On holiday, I used to like catching up on the Sunday Times - I can't do that any more.
  • The automatic download of an edition doesn't work.
  • I have had problems where I've tried to turn a page and it has taken me back to the start of the article I'm reading.
  • This morning I tried going to another story and it took me back to the front page where it superimposed the front page with the page I was on.
  • I'm dreading Sunday. If the sections don't download automatically then I will have to download each one manually as they got rid of the 'download all sections' button.

iTunes is full of people giving this app terrible reviews.

I can't believe it got through testing by anyone at The Times or at Apple.

If it doesn't improve soon, I will cancel my subscription because I'm not paying for something I can't use.

P.S. I've just tried it on a friend's iPad 3 and it is a completely different experience to my iPad 1. So, anyone thinking of subscribing needs an iPad 3 or 4.

Comments

  • My experience exactly the same and I also have an I-pad 1
I wish they had left the option open of sticking with the original app
