I Pod(s) help - think I've messed up :(

Hubby recently got a new I-pod nano which resulted in some swapping around of previous ipods between him and I so I could have his previous one and he could have my ancient one to keep in his pickup truck. The only challenge was that we needed to swap music around so....

Some of the music was on i-tunes some not. I have managed to synchronise 2 of the ipods the way I want however really screwed up on the oldest one, which was the "administrators" ipod on itunes. I've managed to delete everything from it:eek:

So I thought there was no panic as I had previously downloaded all the music into a library which I had created on my laptop. C 400 mpeg files which I can click on and they play.
If I right click on them it gives me the option (when connected) to send them to the administrator ipod.

However nothing is transferring over. I've just spent the last 90 minutes religously right clicking every track but I can't get a hold of them anywhere on itunes or the ipod.

I'm sure it's blindingly obvious how I get them from laptop to empty administrator ipod but I'm stuck so would welcome any help (before I have to confess to hubby!)

I'm a bit frazzled so I'm off to bed and won't reply until tomorrow when I attempt round 2 but would be really grateful for pointers.

thanks

  • One key point may help you.

You can't (generally) use Windows explorer to send MP3s to an iPod.

You can use other management programmes but the way you are intended to do it is through iTunes.

What you need to do is start up iTunes, plug the iPod in and then use iTunes to manage the music on to your iPod.

This can be less than entirely obvious, if it won't all fit then sometimes iTunes can further compress (recode) the music to make it fit. Otherwise you pick the songs you wish to send (selected by artist, track etc.) and then "sync".

Where have you got to in this process ?

If you give more detail more help can be offered but the whole way that the iPod/iTunes combination works can be confusing at times.

    .

You can... sort of. My method uses windows explorer and iTunes together.
If you have the mp3 music files on your computer then launch itunes and connect the iPod. The ipod should appear in the list on the left within iTunes.

You can 'drag' files directly from windows explorer and drop them on the icon of the ipod in the itunes window and it will copy them.
Note that this isn't 'syncing' anything as its just a quick and easy way of copying files to your ipod. (confusingly the ipod says 'synchronising' - whilst the files are copying)
Its what I do as the sync thing is so confusing to me and also I have more music on my PC that will fit onto my ipod so I do it manually.

    hope this helps
  • thanks both. I'm now completely stuck as the blasted laptop is as dead as a doornail tonight. When I switch on the fan comes on then dies immediately so it looks like a trip to the repair shop next Saturday as that's the earliest I'm free.

Meanwhile I'm using the tiny netbook which is fine for holidays but not really much use for longer term use.

As soon as the repairman revives the dead laptop I'll give it a try. In the meantime I will have to confess to OH as we now have one empty ipod!

If your lap top has a removable battery then take it out and see if the lap top will switch on with just the power lead plugged in (and no battery)

Not a fix but if it works then at least you could be up and running of sorts.
