Drove through deep water. (Diesel)

Sunday I drove through some deep water in my diesel fiesta it went on for a far distance and I couldnt really stop or turn around once I was commited.
I stopped the car when I reached the shop but when I started driving again acceleration was poor there was some black smoke and it sounded loud. It lasted a few minutes then cleared itself and I thankfully managed to get home. I left it to dry out for a day but each time I have used it since it has had an episode of this bad acceleration and black smoke, usually when I first use it or after the engine has been turned off and on again.
Anyone suggest anything I could try before I have to take it to the garage?
Thanks.

Take the air filter out and change it for a new one , if this works you don't know how lucky you've been.0

Yes, it won't help much though:
Next time you see deep water, remember not to drive through it!
If you mention the make and model, I'm sure someone here will be able to give you a few pointers.0 -

Change the air filter (wipe out any water you find in the housing) then try again.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
As it clears itself, well done, go buy a lottery ticket as you've been very, very lucky. Don't run it at all until you've dried out the complete air intake as even the moisture in a soggy filter can be enough to wreck the engine.0
