DVD drive not recognising blank CD's. HELP!

My DVD/CD drive is playing up. I can put in movies, music or any CD with anything on it and it will work, I can view and use files. However, when I try put a blank CD in an error comes up saying ' 
\ is not accessible' ' Incorrct function'.
What on earth does that mean? It used to work, for about a week or so its gone like this? It plays dvd's but can't burn dvd's or anything as its a cd writer only.

EDIT: Sorry didn't read the whole of your post. (not to self-dont be hasty)
You would expect that it wouldn't burn DVDs as its not a dVD burner by the sounds of it.
Have you installed or updated any drivers in the last week or so?
Try going to the manufactures website and install the latest drivers.0 -
Have you tried using different discs ? it could be you have a faulty batch of discs.0
