Personal Tax Return - paid too much tax - refund due?

Options
I did my personal tax return for 2011/12 last month, I had a limited company and it appeared that I had paid too much tax from my own company and then through PAYE in that tax year. When would I be likely to be due a tax refund?

  • did you submit return online?
did you actually claim a refund on your return?
have you logged into your SA account and looked at your current statement after submitting the return?

I submitted my return online, didn't claim a refund on return, but put bank details in for any potential return. Not done that after submitting return. It was in region of £600.
  • if you didnt claim on your return then why do you think youll be getting a refund?

check your sa account and if you are in credit by the expected amount then contact revenue and ask for the credit to be repaid using the details you entered on your return

have to say i didnt realise you could enter your bank details but not claim a refund

There's a section saying if you are due a refund, please fill in bank details. I'm due a refund I believe as I paid tax as part of own job and through PAYE, so on tax return it estimated I was due to pay x amount, but had already paid more than that in tax.
  • if the end result of your return was an amount due then this is what you need to pay, no refund would be due unless you had made some direct payments onto your sa account (known as payments on account)

did you actually include the paye tax deducted by your employer on your return?

Yeah, I included the tax that I had paid as shown on my wage slips.

something is amiss somewhere as on one hand youre expecting a refund yet in one post above you say the return showed you were due to pay x amount

either post up the figures or check your sa account to see what this shows as it makes no sense at present

My return stated a certain amount of tax. But overall, I paid tax when I shut my company down and then through PAYE. I haven't got login details so can't post exact figures at mo, sorry.

What kind of tax was paid when you shut the company - income tax, corporation tax, etc?

Corporation tax, which from my personal return also had to put earnings as a director.
