Was looking around this site and saw DVD players with Divx.
Just some Q's
Can someone answer a couple of Q's for technologically inept Sylvester?
1. Is there a DVD player that will play AVI's/WMV's and Mpegs ?
2. If yes, do these AVI's/WMV's and Mpegs (and DivX) have to be burnt to DVD, or can you burn to CD-R's and then play them on the DVD player?
Thanks

Just to clarify
AVI - is a file container. AVI may contain "any" (almost) format of video/sound
MPEG2 = video standard (DVD video - digital tv)
MPEG4 = video standard (xvid, divx, wmv etc)
xvid, divx, wmv = specifically a way of encoding into MEPG4 video. Any MPEG4 decoder should be able to decode xvid, divx, qt, etc (but in reality on windows machines you need a codec for each (on linux you dont))
Some DivX, xvid and wmv files contain special "software" only algorithms that can not be played on an MPEG4 player unless you get an expensive one.
So in theory a DivX player should be able to decode wmv files. But if this important to you then I would make sure before you buy.0 -

It doesn't neccesarily have to decode WMV files, but would be a bonus.
I have lots of files on PC & Cd - Xvid, divx, Mpeg, AVI (thought that was a file) wmv etc that I would like to put on, or have put on CD-R (not DVD's as have DVD Rom, not DVD RW) that would like to play on a DVD player through the TV, but my standard cheapo £25 DVD player won't play.

Would the above player possibly play some of my downloaded movies/music video files, from a CD-R?
How would I know before hand? Would GSpot be of any use?

I havn't got that exact one but I have 2 xvid/divx players. It will play files from both CD and DVD.
If the DVD player your looking at only says divx it might not play Mpeg4 (.mp4) files. A friend of mine has one ike that.0 -

Thanks, I may have a look at the bush one then.
My basic player does not like CD's apart from Jpegs!0 -
How much are you looking to spend? This one says MPEG4 as well as DIVX

Also SVP are a really good company to deal with. I've been using them for years.0

I can spend upto about 50 or 60 as finances aren't superb.
Those listed look pretty good, but had hoped could just go to a store and purchase. They are tempting though - thanks for looking them up
If I used Gspot on some files and it told me what the files were, would I then know if that bush one was of use to me?
Thanks0 -
Sorry can't help with gspot I've never used it! My player plays most things. It does have an issue with some xvid files. but thats getting far too complicated. It still playes them
Have you condidered conversion software.
VSO ConverXtoDVD is good software that takes any type of video file and converts it into a 'normal' DVD that can be played on most players0 -

I'll have a look at Gspot and see if can work out myself.
I have WinAVI which can convert to DVD, but then can't burn onto DVD as my CD drive is DVD Rom not DVD-RW0 -
Went to Argos this morning and asked for the Bush player I posted above, but out of stock, but were substituting it for a higher spec model at same price. Tried and it works

Any WMV files I really want, I will convert
Thanks for all the help0
