Thanks for the quick reply...think I need to give more info (this is for a friend who's computer will not go passed the initial start up(where the row of coloured lights go across under the windows logo) someone suggested she install xp again  She does not have an xp disc as it was already loaded when she was given the computer. I hope I have made myself understood?

if im right a hidden partition is on the hard disk driver, u can separate the partitions into different sections and each section is given a letter for example if you were to split into 4 parts they might be labelled as drive, drive b, drive c and drive d,

you will need a valid serial number to be able to reinstall. once you have that you can install from any disk (or even download the software). id there a sticker on the pc with the serial on it?

Hi, Normally reinstalling windows can be done in 3 ways. Either having the original OS discs, which in this case they are not available.

Or a partition on the Hardrive is made and that partition can be used to reinstall the OS. or downlaoding and adding a serial number.

This can normally be normally accessed "if" it has been done, on boot up.

For example on dell its something like the ctrl key and F8 i think.

It all depends if the partition was already made.

So we can help you further the question is

    what computer make is it?
was it brought direct from the company or how purcahsed?
whats the reason not having the disc?

Your friend must have a high opinion on your expertise on computer related matters  . As per previous poster Need make, model to give best advice.

You may be able to force the computer into safe mode and restore to a previous good condition try esc, f8 or f12 keys separately as it starts and it may come up with a menu from which you can make a selection.
