Foster brother found old coins

Not sure where to put this but my foster brother just came in with a giant pocket full of 1 penny and half penny coins from the 1930's to 1960's.

They look the size of modern 2p coins, took a struggle making him understand he can't cash them in at the bank bless him.

Luckily he understood the word 'antique'.

I know it's subjective but are they worth anything? I did a search and got a ball park figure of 50p- £4.oo depending on condition.

My step-dad is not impressed he remembers putting them in the machines for candy, also he says these were the coins that spawned the phrase 'spend a penny' as he remembers them being used for the loo.

Still he was only born in 1953...

Actually he can cash them at the bank. But may not be easy or worth doing.

Unless he has a 1933 one ( I think that's the one that's worth lots).

He just found a ready made collection! most are not worth anything by the sound of it. They have to be 'mint' condition before most serious collectors would even look at them!
saying that - its worth examining them for 'anomalies', such as the date being the wrong way round or the kings head missing or something left off - even in bad condition these can be worth money!

yeah davey - I remember that day well and the weeks and months that followed! I was working in Woolworths as a Saturday girl - and as I was one of the few staff who actually grasped how metrication of money worked was asked to work on 'changeover day'. It was awful! had oaps in tears trying to work out how to pay etc! had 'clever cloggs' trying to intimidate staff (who still didnt understand it) into giving more change...........but, on the whole the system worked! funnily enough it wasnt the youngest customers who grasped it easiest.
It is much easier than the old pounds shillings and pence system -Not to mention soveriegns and half soveriegns!
