Help with KGB/Deals4Gadgets Refund

Back in October I bought a Christmas present for my mum from KGB Deals & Deals4Gadgets (it was a 10" tablet for £89.99 plus £9.99 postage).
She has been trying to use it but it seems to be very temperamental and refuses to switch on half the time and has a very poor battery life.
I am going to return it to them however I thought that any postage costs would be covered by the company and not by myself.
The other problem I found is that I purchased the deal on the 24th October 2012, delivery was mid December 2012 (another issue there, dozens of unanswered emails to KGB and Deals4Gadgets) but according to their policy I have 40 days in which to return faulty goods which I am obviously well past now.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
