any pschology/sociology students out there?

hello,
My daughter is in yr 1 of a psychosocial degree & is desperately trying to find some voluntary work for the summer to get some much needed experience. Are there any establishments that take on voluntary staff?

i am doing a sociology course but im doing voluntary work at 2 places, one being a charity shop and one being a police station, both are giving me much needed experience in different ways.

It all depends on what she wants to volunteer in. I arranged mine with my career advisor at university.

i know a psychology student who volunteers with a local headway group for head injured people. she basically helps the clients while they are there doing different activities (newspaper group, crafts, playing games etc)

Definitely worth speaking to the careers advisor at her uni and maybe lecturers too. Or is she looking at a different town - as in going home for summer?

We have a volunteer bureau here - you go along and say what you are looking for and they give you details of voluntary agencies looking for people. I found out about them via the CAB.

You could try the local connexions too - they help with all sorts. Or, if at home, could she contact the college she attended before uni as they may have connections with local organisations that take students?

It depends a lot on what she wants to do when she leaves too?

If she is thinking about working with youths or children, what about American summer camps - they advertise in unis and are looking for all sorts of skills - would be great for her CV I imagine?

There is an online site that deals with volunteering too - I think it's called 'time to give' or something like that. If you google voluntary work you should find it.

Try the volunteer bureau or look at https://www.do-it.org.uk - I work in Mental Health for the NHS and we have social/psychology strudents come into our rehab units for experience over the summer.
  • i'm hoping to start an applied psychology and sociology degree in september. i volunteered in a hospital when i was interested in clincial psychology.. But i'm now more interested in focusing more on being an educational psychologist - any ideas where i could get experience?

I already work with kids at a playscheme and have completed the training for special needs, disability awareness to develop my understanding in those areas

you could ring CAHMS to see if they will take you on as a student - they may do so if they are affiliated to your uni. depending on where your at you could also try social services education services.

yes plenty - but depends on what area she's wishing to work in. most voluntary organisations (such as family welfare assoc.) will take on students - if the role may involve children - she will need to have a current CRB check.

child behaviour groups such as fun and families will also take her on voluntarily . and childrens centres run by social services will possibly help. another thought is that if she is willing to earn whilst learn there may be an opportunity within the county council that she wants to work with and establish if they are looking for any temporary jobs that may be suitable for her (such as summer playschemes), this will give her an insight to child development and how they learn.

it really depends on which area of psychology she wants to look at -children -adult -forensic-clinical- behaviour - advertising etc.
