What are your favourite portal web sites

The internet is vast and yet when I sit down at the lap top looking for something interesting I tend to go to my usual handful of web sites in search of something interesting to browse.

lifehacker, theverge, bbcnews, here (of course)

Just wondering what other peoples starting web sites are?

I occasionally use Stumbleupon but wonder what portals/jump points people use nowadays.

I work in online marketing so I start with 4-5 SEO blogs. Also techcrunch, theregister.
I love Buzzfeed for amusing/odd stories too, and for a cheap laugh 9gag.

Reddit - looks odd at first, but once you get the hang of it - a real time waster.
Has something of interest to everyone with the huge number of sub reddits.

I can't imagine merely going in search of 'something to browse' without a focus, or a starting topic.

Armed with a starting topic or phrase, the first port of call (as you can probably guess) is a google search, or specific websites, rather than something that links to websites.

If you use a portal, aren't you implicitly limiting yourself to stuff that someone else has selected for you, rather than selecting it yourself?

I hven't used a portal site in years. I was a great fan of yahoo, but the discovered google for search and then gmail.

I'm not talking about work or research but the equivalent of channel hopping on satellite or cable when bored or have half an hour to spare.

Real portals are a dying breed - most of the aforementioned are news sites!
