I know you can only claim for a lost post item if you sent it recorded. Even having a proof of postage receipt does not entitle you to your lost money

Just to reiiterate what Princess just said, you absolutely can claim with just a POP, Recorded delivery is not necessary in the slightest (and hardly ever tracks as well, making it a complete waste of time) :)

Hi, Sorry to bother you all but I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice? I won an Advent prize and was informed of my win at the beginning of the year. It wasn't expensive (worth £10) but would be lovely for my daughter. The thing is - the prize hasn't arrived and the company claim to have posted it out 2nd class 2 weeks ago (not recorded though). I have emailed them this week to say it has not yet arrived and all they said was 'be patient, be patient it will turn up!' Well after being posted 2 weeks ago, I would have thought it should have arrived by now?

Anyway, what I would like to know is - if a prize does get lost through the post, are we entitled to ask for the company to send another? After all, it isn't our fault the prize has gone astray (and we cannot prove they even posted it out in the first place?) Whenever I send anything via post these days, I always send it recorded as I don't trust the Royal Mail. Has anyone experienced a lost prize, and what did you do?

The fact you make this statement, shows you have no idea how recorded works

Probably not what you want to hear, and probably extremely rare (at least I am hoping so!) Christmas 2011 I won a £100 Twilight Goody bag, emailed them after 28 days as it did not arrive. They sent me a tracking number which showed it had been signed for in the December, although it was not my name or any of my families.
Headed off to sorting office, the signature they knew, it was the postmans! They rang him & he claimed he had had no answer and had popped it through the letterbox & signed for it (considering the volume of mail & the weeks passed am surprised he rembered signing for a parcel for my address a month before!). They assured me he was trustworthy although I had never received it, and that he would be disciplined for signing for the parcel.
Back on to the company, who said the parcel was too large to be put through a letterbox so postman could not have put it through door, never got my prize and postman still delivers here, although he won't even let children sign for parcels now it has to be me or OH.
I love this board, have "virtually" met so many lovely people, people I am honoured to count as friends.

Bit of a dig! Ok, so I don't have much idea of the different postal services, but all I was looking for was some advice - not a dig! Thanks to the other posters for their advice!

Sorry to hear that Becky - seems like a dishonest postman! They should not be allowed to sign for any parcels! I would have thought the company would have had more sympathy :(

After the prize sender told you that it was too big to go through the letterbox I would have made an official complaint of theft- the parcel didn't reach you, the postman signed for it when he shouldn't have, so that is enough for an official complaint in my book...

you asked for advice on lost items/possible unsent items, then you made a comment on sending items and compounded it by showing you are paying £1 more than you have to given you are using it for added 'security' in your mind
it would be better to do research on the subject than make spurious statements.
I have advised many members on this forum on the pros and cons of RD many times.
however its pretty much in the name. a record of delivery
    outwith that,it adds nothing
