redex fuel system cleaner - poor results at first, now it's getting fixed again

Used the fuel system cleaner as it was on a discount at asda (£3 for 2 full tanks worth). Looked up honest john apparantly it's good but I need the injector cleaner not the fuel system cleaner.

MPG dropped from 31 to 28 first tank I used it, on the second tank it was roughly that level at the beginning - but now it's become a bit better.

I read that it may have "dislodged" something at the start and pushed the contaminents down the chain and after a few fillups it should be better off than originally.

Anyone have any experience to back that up?

Just ordered a better value 4 full tank servings (500ml total) from ebay. Going to persist with it and see if it gets better.

  • What car are we talking about?

Tbh, adapting one's driving style would probably result in superior mpg and not cost you any money.

It seems like you are trying to spend money to save money? How much have you paid for all this injector cleaner?

£3 for a 250ml bottle at asda (fuel system cleaner)
£5.90 for a 500ml bottle from ebay (injector cleaner)

It's not just about saving money, want to car to remain clean and run smooth. interesting to note that VW also has it's own injector cleaner (part number G 001 700 03)

£2.25 in Wilkinsons for the 250mm injector cleaner
  • youll get better results by changing the fuel filter for less than £10 and be done with it instead of spending approx 4-5 quid periodically for treatments.

typically the treatments get held up in the filter elemant anyways and only a certain % of it gets into the injectors and rail, MPG reduces only slightly when the element of the filter is past its use, paper element ones need changing sooner for clogging up of the element.

Its rubbish snake oil, You wasted £3.

Service the car properly and more often than the manufacturers recommended MAXIMUM figures.

If the book says 12,000 miles then you dont have to try and get to 11,999.

My oil gets done every 6 months and a full service every year. A full year is only 4000 - 8000 miles.

So it doesnt do more than 4000 miles between oil changes.

Just did a DIY oil change - first time round it was really messy. Got all the tools dirty, used the wrong drain pan (the jerry can type). Which spilled oil everywhere. This weeked doing the gear oil service so fingers crossed everything goes smoothly - got the bowl type pan

Car feels a lot smooth and makes a nicer sound than before the oil service. mpg did go up a little - but like I said fuel is oil based and all oil can dry and leave a greasy residue so it's worth doing an internal clean every now and again.

Not with redex you wont. Trust me ive tried it on parts not fitted to the car.

Used neat on some carbon with the help of a brush, Maybe but there are engine cleaners for a fraction of the price that work better.

But 50ml or 100ml in 50L of fuel it does nothing.
