Hole in wall fire - distance from floor.

Just had a quote for a hole in the wall gas fire with a glass front.
Was told the maximum distance the bottom of the fire can be is 300mm. Looking at these type of fires in brochures etc they are sometimes half way up the wall. We are replacing an existing brick fireplace with chimney. Anyone shed any light on this?

I would imagine every manufacturer will have a minimum and maximum distance for mounting the fires from floors.

Have you googled the make / model to see what the tech specs are ?

Yes.... Very confusing. They say MINIMUM of 300 mm. Fitter said minimum of 50mm and MAXIMUM of 300 mm?

Looks to me the builder has got his facts wrong, section 12 definately says 300mm from floor MINIMUM.

Section 13 says when installed in a fire surround then it has to be 60mm from the hearth, but that isnt what you are wanting. I'd bookmark the instructions and show him.

Nice fire btw :) ive seen a few wood burners like this and they do look smart.

Take what is read in the installer guide as being correct, not what the installer says. The fires have to go through rigorous testing to be able to sell them and have to go through a testing house.

Most likely the installer has seen that it will be easier for him to fit at 50mm as he won't have to mess about with the lintel. He will also have less plastering to do his way. 50mm is way too low for a HIW fireplace, you need it at a similar height to your sofa in order for it to look good 300mm should be just right.

    Mucky's advice is spot on

Thanks both - the fitter didn't suggest 50mm, just that that was the minimum, he said he same as you Rustyboy21 about sitting on the sofa and not having to look up at the fire. Sounds like I'll have to cut a piece of card out and see what it looks like 300mm up.
