M.O.T test - insurance and mot

I am getting a new car and my old one will need an M.O.T later in March. The car won't be driven but I need to put it through an M.O.T. to see whether it's worth keeping or not.

I won't have insurance or a MOT and want to know the legal position regarding driving to the garage for the MOT.

Also if the car needs scrapping, do I need insurance and MOT to take the car to the scrap yard?

I suppose I could take the car in before I get the new one.

Anyway what are the legalities of the above?

  • You can't drive it on the road without insurance.
Well ... you can ... but you're not allowed to.
  • Nothing to stop you having the MOT done early. You can do it 2 weeks before expirey and and still have exp dated.

You must be covered by insurance in order to drive the car on a road or other public place. There are no exceptions.
You could buy a 1-day policy or ask the garage to collect and drop it off (then their driver would be covered by their trade insurance).

You do not need a current MOT if you are driving to or from a pre-arranged and booked MOT.

You can take it 28 days early, So do it now and save the hassle.

You may lose a few days. But cheaper than getting short term insurance or caught driving with no insurance.
