Your ownership is registered electronically at the Land Registry, not via paper 'Deeds' any more.

If you are doing your own conveyancing you must submit the appropriate form to them (usually TR1).

If you have a solicitor, he will do it.

He should in due course send you any related documents, or he may store them for you. If you want them, ask - but wait a week or two. He's probobly still doing your SDLT form (stamp duty) and will send everything together, as well as a final account.

You can download a copy of the Title from the Land Reg at any time (for any property) for £3 here.

This is something I was just wondering (as it's over 30 years since I last bought a house!).

Are there any particular documents that I should expect to receive after completion? I think the last thing I had from the solicitor was a letter saying telling me when completion would be.
  • We've just been to collect Deeds & paperwork today from our solicitor. We completed on 18th Jan & received a call from solicitor last week to go collect them.

Not sure if all are like this, but you get a period of time to collect them, & if you do not go within that timescale, they get put in storage. You have to pay for this however, & also pay a fee to get them released.
In our paperwork was the house deeds, land registry search documents showing we now own the house, plus a few other bits such as originals of indemnity policies, damp proofing paperwork, cavity wall insulation paperwork.
All we got from bank was a welcome to your new mortgage pack, & details of first payment, such as date coming out of bank, amount etc.

Congratulations on your new home! :T

Take a look at our online FAQs around property ownership, the central record and 'deeds'

As G_M states in most cases your conveyancer will send you paperwork on completion of all matters. And as CrazyChick80 says this may also include documents/guarantees relating to works done on the house.

From an ownership perspective the key thing is knowing that your name(s) have been registered as the legal owner. Once you have been registered then that is largely it.

If in the future you wanted to sell or remortgage then the buyer or lender would simply do their own checks with Land Registry to confirm ownership - they would not rely on any paperwork you may or may not have kept from your own purchase.
