Tesco's car insurance. Is this right?

My wife has only been driving since september last year and is insured by Tesco's.
She is buying a new car tommorrow and it is the same as what she has been driving just a more modern version but a lower engine capacity (1.2 to 1.0i).
The quote was the same as what she is paying now but Tesco's want to charge £73 for a change of policy
Is this normal practice?
All advice gratefully recieved.

I'm afraid that a newer car is likely to attract a higher premium, even if the engine size is smaller. More expensive to repair, etc.

You coulds always ask Tesco the reason for the increase in premium. And if you're not happy, you can always move the cover elsewhere.

Er, yes, telly-addict, but then you'll get charged for terminating the annual insurance policy after only 8 months. It's very unlikely to be worth doing that (and losing 8 months' NCB) for a saving of £73.

thank you both for your input, ive now got another problem as it was a car that we believed, as adverts had told us the mileage was 12.500 miles but it is nearly double that 23198 im not sure what to do.
Can i get a bigger discount of the car even though we have paid.
It surely is false advertisments and i have the newspaper as well as a screen shot advertised at 12.5k miles to back me up.Thats what i judged my valuation on with autotrader and with that double mileage it is 1k cheaper.
Any help is received with thanks

If it was advertised by a private individual, you definitely have no chance at all.

If it was advertised by a trader, you can pursue them for mis-advertising the vehicle, or report them to trading standards, or various other things.

Why in the world didn't you check the mileage on the car when you went to buy it, though?

Thank you for the reply, you are right, the milage should of been checked but it wasn't.
It was sold to my wife by a major Vauxhall dealership and we have the pre-agreement which states the estimated milage 12506 but in small print says this cant be relied upon as actual milage.
But surely over 10.000 miles out is mis-leading.
Of course the other problem is my wife loves the car, It is a unique colour and i know she doesn't want to give it back.
Anyway i shall call them tomorrow and see what they have to say.
    Will keep you posted.

    You've definitely got a case.

The small print you are referring to is to protect the dealer against the car being clocked before they had it. It's NOT to protect them against mis-stating the mileage on the documentation compared to what's showing on the odometer.

I think that you can argue with the dealer that they mis-priced the car, as they thought it had a lower mileage than it did. And you bought it on the strength of that mis-advertised mileage, and they should refund you the difference in value.

And I think that Trading Standards would be very supportive of your case - if the dealer fob you off tomorrow, call Trading Standards.

Most dealerships would be open today, despite it being a bank holiday - don't leave it till tomorrow!

The likely outcome of this is very unlikely to be returning the car and getting a refund. Most likely the dealer will offer you an over-small amount in compensation. Take along your price guide evidence if you actually go to see them about this. And mention that you've been speaking to Trading Standards, if you have.
