At loggerheads with Smeg over repair to dishwasher handle

Hi. As you will see from the attached video I have a rather fundamental issue with my 21 month old Smeg dishwasher, in that the handle has broken! I have contacted Smeg asking them to fix it as it is well within the expected lifespan of the product but they are asking for £150 to do so. I have refused to pay this. Any ideas as to how to proceed from here? Any advice will be greatly appreciated :)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4F6wrwUKUO4

  • Did you purchase the dishwasher directly from Smeg?
If not, they have no legal obligation to do anything about repairing it unless there is a warranty in place and the broken handle is covered.

If you purchased from someone other than Smeg, it is the retailer that you should be talking to but bear in mind that although the Sale of Goods act states that goods should last a reasonable time, it will be up to you to prove that the breakage weasn't caused by misuse but was because of the result of a manufacturing defect.
When faults occur within 6 months of purchse it is assumed that they are inherrent (due to a manufacturing problem) and the retailer must prove otherwise.
After 6 months, it is down to the consumer to prove the manufacturing defect.

Sorry, would you rather I had described the problem in a couple of thousand words instead then meer53?

50-60 words would cover it. Less perhaps?

You've refused to pay. You say you are at loggerheads with Smeg. Are you really ? They've told you how much it will be, it's your choice.

Do you think posting it on Youtube will solve your problem ? I would have thought phoning someone who repairs dishwashers would have had a better result. And much cheaper than Smeg.

I've looked at the Smeg web-site and they don't seem to sell direct (although they might do of course) so the first port of call is the retailer. If it's, for example, John Lewis you may well find their customer service resolves it straight away.

    i bought it from currys.
unluckily for me i had another electrical product that malfunctioned this week - bought elsewhere and by a different manufacturer, and i contacted the manufacturer who straight away said i could return and replace free of charge - it's a shame smeg can't manage anywhere near the same level of service... (though it'd be rather more difficult to post a dishwasher)

But Smeg aren't the retailers. This really, in my view, is entirely a matter for Curry's. If they've refused to help then it's worth getting, IMO, an independent report and pursuing the matter under the Sale of Goods Act.
