M&S PPI claimed but mis-sold

I am helping a relative & looking into the possibility that she might be able to claim for mis-sold PPI.

She has an M&S store card which is still in use and was opened in 1990. She had no knowledge that she had PPI on the card until she had an operation in the mid 1990's and was off work for several months. When she rang M&S at the time to see if they could reduce her monthly payments they told her that she had PPI on the card and she could claim on it whilst off work, she had no idea she had it on the card. She therefore claimed on it and they paid about £1,000 off the balance. A few months later she cancelled the PPI on the card.

Was this PPI mis-sold as she had no knowledge of it on the card? Could she claim anything for it being mis-sold even though she claimed on the PPI at the time? If she can claim it's mis-sold would they expect payment of the £1,000 back i.e. if the mis-sold PPI amounted to say £600 and they had already paid out £1,000 on the claim would they chase her for the other £400?

Hope someone can help, thanks.

Even if you won a mis-selling complaint (unlikely, I have to say), any redress would have the £1,OOO she claimed twenty years ago subtracted from it. So I doubt there would be much left. It's also unlikely that M&S still have any record of such old finance, so any complaint would probably be dismissed on that alone.

On what basis would she complain? She can hardly say she didn't need the insurance, as it was there when she claimed on it!
