Toothache - best option for remedy to take on holiday?

Hi,
Hoping toothsmith or brook2jack may see this. I've just found out I need root canal treatment
Dreading this as I've heard such horror stories, but anyway, the point is i'm going on holiday, and despite trying everything, there is no way I can get the 3 lots of treatment completed before I go.
I'll have had the first appointment only (2 days before I fly out), then go on holiday for 2 weeks.
I have toothache but it is currently manageable. I'm just concerned it may get worse whilst on holiday, especially having had it rooted around in, during that 1st part of the treatment.
I know people recommend all sorts of things e.g. clove oil, but not all of them necessarily work and/or are best recommended (I realise clove oil for example could burn).
So, what would be the best thing I could buy, to take on holiday with me, just in case of awful toothache?
The dentist has already said they'll give me antibiotics to take away with me, just in case I need them, so that is kind of her.
But wouldn't want to take them willy nilly so looking at what else could help.
Many thanks.

Take your dentists advice (and antibiotics) with you. If you have pain the antibiotics will be the thing that sorts it out. Other than that ask their advice on what to do if in pain as painkillers should be tailored to medical history and they may give you other advice as to what to do if it acts up.
Also ensure you have your holiday insurance details with you, and note if you are a denplan , practice plan or similar patient those all have an insurance policy included to cover emergency treatment abroad. Keep any receipts if you need treatment to claim back, if necessary.0 -
Definitely taking my dentist's advice, I will take the antibiotics with me, it would be daft not to.
I just meant, that if i have pain which I can tolerate and don't feel the need to take antibiotics for, I would want something to help ease it.
If I do have severe pain I'll be straight onto the antiobiotics!
I didn't think of this when at the dentist today, and won't be able to ask the dentist until I see her again 2 days before I go away, so not very much time to get anything unfortunately. I'd rather order now.
History wise I've only had the odd filling, nothing else. Just after the most effective over the counter type product I could use.
Thank you for mentioning insurance, I stupidly hadn't even thought about that. I will of course have my normal holiday insurance details with me, but I do have an element of dental cover (pay and claim), which I will be calling on for the treatment. But never thought of checking for cover whilst abroad, so thanks for pointing that out.0 -
Your first treatment should be the drilling out and cleaning phase so fingers crossed no more pain ( I've never had )
Root canal treatment does not hurt
You are in the chair for ages
You have your mouth open for what feels like forever
You hear some really scary noises
You smell some really yucky smells
You may feel like your tooth is being pulled from your head
But none of it hurts
Ive 5 root canal treatments and I'd rather them then a filling to be honest0 -
Thanks Suki, good to know that someone has gone through it without major issues. I'm not at all fussed about having a filling, I really can't imagine root canal being less problematic than a filling!
No pain recommendations as yet, looks like I'll just have to pick something from the chemist. Was hoping to get a recommendation rather than just pick for myself
I wouldn't be so bothered but with going away on holiday I want to make sure I've taken all possible precautions - in addition to taking the antibiotics with me just in case.
Today I've woken up feeling like I have a nasty virus, throat is so so sore, and my body is all feeling off. Wondering if somehow an infection in my tooth has spread but not really sure if that can happen, or if this is just an unfortunate coincidence.
If I have to have toothache, I'd rather have it exclusively of any other pain0 -

I eat no sugar at all as I am low carbing.
What is oil pulling, I've not heard of that before? I have some coconut oil in the fridge so could try it?

Hmm interesting. From that wiki page I can't see how it would help directly but I will go away and do some research. Certainly doesn't look like it could do me any harm so will read up, and perhaps give that a go.

I had a tooth abscess over Xmas, I tried everything eg oil pulling, clove and green tea.
Desperate for a remedy I followed a friends recommendation and tried MDMA, woke up the next morning and the abscess was almost down and went the following day.
Probably not to everyone's liking but it worked for me...0
