MACbook upgrade help!

Hi All,

After seeing a post on the Debt free part of the forum I wanted to download a trial of YNAB onto my MACbook, but now it's downloaded it's saying that it cannot be used with my version of OS X. My version is MAC OS X version 10.5.8. I've tried oing to the MAC website but I have no idea what I need to upgrade to, can anyone please advise!

Yes, sounds like you'll need to upgrade the operating system as 10.5 is quite old now - the current on is OS X 10.8!!!

Note sure what you'll have to do to upgrade as in the more recent versions its possible to do it over the internet using the app store (which isn't available in 10.5). I suspect you'll probably need to procure a later version of OS X on disc somehow - IIRC the last one to be available on Disk was Snow Leopard (10.6) and after that updates are delivered using the app store.

Note: if your Macbook has a PowerPC processor inside you won't be able to upgrade it.

Leopard is the final version of Mac OS X to support the PowerPC architecture as Snow Leopard functions solely on Intel based Macs.

MacBooks have only ever had Intel processors, so we're OK there (Powerbooks or iBooks were G4 and back).
You need to let us know the model number of your MacBook as some are falling off the very latest OS support. Goto the Apple symbol top left and click 'About My Mac' - this should help us work out if you're compatible.
Since you're so far behind, if you can get 10.8 Snow Leopard, it would be best to install fresh. Back up your data, install the OS, install applications, restore data.
I don't think you can buy Snow Leopard physically. If you make an appointment at an Apple Store, they can buy it for you online (using your AppleID), download it for you and put it onto your 8GB USB stick, whick you can then freshly install 10.8 from. If your MacBook is compatible.

Hows about going with the v3 which looks to work with OSX 10.5 upwards. Its older and missing some of the newer features but well worth a go to see if you like it.

You can phone Apple Store Online, not a retail store, and they have copies of 10.6.8 which will allow you to purchase Mountain Lion through the App Store. You may also need to upgrade the MacBook to 2 or 4Gb of RAM as well.

When phoning you need to speak to the Legacy Software Dept

The whole point of this is to improve how you budget, so rather than upgrading your OS and potentially paying for other software, why not just use a spreadsheet? If you dont have office, try this free one which looks very much like Microsoft Office http://www.openoffice.org/download/ or Google Docs https://drive.google.com for online access-anywhere.

Open Office is very outdated these days, http://www.libreoffice.org is what all the cool kids are using

millypede - yes, but that involves purchasing and installing 2 Operating Systems. It does allow the OP to upgrade twice though, rather than having to do a fresh install.
