System Sounds & IE Missing Sound Problem

Hi all, I've spent ages trying to sort this out for myself, but despite several troubleshooters, probing through the Control Panel Settings and pulling out my hair I still cannot rectify it myself and knew from previous experience that one of you boffins would definitely know where I was going wrong....
...well, here goes...
I've bought a new Acer PC from Misco running Windows XP with Logitech desktop speakers and a subwoofer which work fine with Creative Player, Windows Media, PC games etc, but for some reason I don't get any of the system sounds, error beeps or Windows sign on tune and websites remain silent - so no browsing new bands in MySpace etc.
I'm sure it'll be easy to fix but it's so frustrating when you just don't know HOW!
I appreciate your time and would be grateful for any light you can shed on the problem!
Many thanks
HB
