Can you claim for losses while on the sick

My son has been struck down with a bad case of gastroenteritis. Looks like he will be off work for around 4 or 5 days maybe a week. He works for a security company in a supermarket and I don't think he gets sick pay for the first 4 days and properly doesn't get a full shift allowance while on the sick. As money is really tight at the moment if he loses £200 this is a big loss from a monthly wage when rent has to be paid and fuel you know all the expenses.

Can he claim anything from the social security for any sick.

The fist 3 days are called waiting days and no one gets those paid I'm afraid.

Then you just have to manage on the rest, unless of course he has family to support
but it would hardly be worth it for a couple of days after which he would be returning to work.

If he just lives at home with you then no, he has to manage.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I don't think you can go through life looking for a job that will pay sick pay can you. My lad has worked since left school at 16, joined the army did the tours for 7 years then came out. Got a SIA licence and found a job with a 'top' security company as jobs where very hard to find when he came out of the forces. Never been ill in his life, as such. Got gastroenteritis and will proberly be only off 4 or 5 days as he cant afford to lose money (you don't have to worry about that if unemployed as you don't lose income when not fit to find work) So he will drag himself to work in a day or 2.

The unemployed have to be fit every day to look for work or you are signed off actually and if you are sick for longer than 14 days you have to sign off as you are not looking for work

Funny thing is though how would the employment office know if you were sick for 4 days? Ive never seen them round knocking on doors making sure the unemployed are all healthy and fit and organising medicals and issuing vitamins!! In my humble opinion the unemployment office cant be arsed if you are ill or not, they do not give a fiddlers fart if you are homeless, jobless ill or fit. infact they recommend single girls to get preggers and claim everything.

Funny thing I know that's true (not in my case though)

They have NEVER recommended to me to get pregnant at all so it must just be where you live but if you are in work how would you know that?

The JC would know that by the ammount of jobs you have applied for in that 2 week period or if you sign on the day you are ill you have so declare you are sick if you can not make it to sign and are only allowed 2 periods of sickness in 1 year even if its two lots of 1 day.

Plus if on the work programme you have to attend more appointments and email over all the jobs you apply for an a lot more.

Might be worth him asking if there are any extra shifts going - if the bug is going around there might be a few extra slots as others go sick or if someone has had to cover his shifts they might be willing to arrange a swap for one of theirs.
