Enhanced CRB

Is it the same thing as security cleared being asked for in job sites, especially for IT jobs?
What's the best way and time line to get that?

  • Hi there

Enhanced CRB checks are made for positions whereby you have regulated activity with children or vulnerable adults. Now, this is not very clearly defined, however, only a position which is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 is legally allowed to apply for an ECRB. Security clearance is run through a different agency. There are many security clearance checks, such as jobs whereby a person is an approved FSA employee in a controlled function position.

So, if you have applied or are in a job which requires an ECRB this will detail any convictions spent or unspent and any other "soft intelligence" from the Police National Computer. Arrests, allegations, No Further Actions, acquittals.

As for time lines, then it can take anything up to a month. But it depends on who applies, umbrella agencies can access them quicker for companies, but it depends on your employer. You have every right to ask if the position is exempt from the ROA and no employer can request information without your written permission.

So do you have to get jobs first to get the SC asked for those IT jobs!
Or can I get this indendantly on my own. This sounds like chicken and egg....

Also Is enhanced CRB more than SC

Are you looking to apply for a position in IT? If so, is your position a controlled function job? Such as in finance, working for the government or law?

You're not being very clear on what you're asking.

ECRB checks are for regulated activity with children and vulnerable adults. That could mean care work, educational positions where you spend a certain amount of time with children/vulnerable adults, unsupervised.

Security clearance is a separate process known as vetting. This could include all manner of areas, credit check, police checks, counter-terrorist checks and these positions are usually non exempt from the ROA. So a basic check for the criminal side of the matter would be undertaken.

If you tell me the job you're asking about, I am then able to advise. If it is a controlled function position within a department then their policy on vetting and disclosure and barring is what you need to ask. You're not able to access this clearance yourself. You're not allowed to access a CRB check yourself, only a basic one which will show any unspent convictions.

So, if you tell me just the position you're asking about, whether it is a controlled function position, then I may be able to help.

Banking, law, school, goverment agency? What job are you asking about? All departments have IT specialists and all areas have certain screening procedures in place.

Thanks for your response. I am technical expert and what I look is technical skills mentioned in the job irrespective of the industry i.e. it could be Banking or Telecom or Govt etc..

Take this job for e.g. I am not bothered which industry it is as long as it matches my technical skills. It is asking for "To apply for this role, you must be eligible for SC Clearance". What does it really mean? Is there a generic security clearance which I can get it done pro actively?

By the way it's not a CRB any more, it's a DBS check.. Disclosure and Barring Service.

You're correct, it is now the DBS, however, standard and enhanced checks will still be carried out. It's the name from CRB to a "service" which has changed, all checks remain the same name.
  • SC vetting is nothing to do with CRB checks - it is an entirely different process.

    Now this is clearer.

To be eligible for SC, you have to have a sponsor complete the registration and on applying for a job which requires SC clearance, you will be given a questionnaire to complete and it has to be completed by a sponsor who works for the MOD. If you're applying for a position via an agency, then the agency should guide you on the process for security clearance. If you're not dealing directly with children/vulnerable adults then IT positions are not subjected to ECRB and the jobs are exempt from ECRB. Whoever you apply to will give you the questionnaire, they'll likely be sponsored by the MOD. You cannot in any way shave off any time applying yourself. You're not allowed.

'To be eligible for SC Clearance', I would assume to be a citizenship thing, ie: you Must be a British Citizen - someone correct me if I'm wrong :)
