Are Two way tickets better?

Forgive me if this question has been asked to death already.
I am trying to get a cheap one way ticket to Philadelphia for my niece who
is a student returning to her uni on 27th July.
It seems that return fares are cheaper than one way but she says that to
buy a return ticket and not use the return portion will give problems the next time she travels. Is this the case-and why?

Several airlines (BA for one) have special fares for students returning to the country where they study. These fares are not available on-line, but are usually a good deal.

Otherwise, she would not have any trouble if she chose not to use the return half of her ticket.

Thanks for all your help. She got a call back from one company who then
dropped the price slightly so as she decided to go with them.
  • one way tickets are generally the same price as a return or just a little less....the only benefit of them is the increased flexibilty that they offer

It is often against the terms and conditions to use return tickets just for the outbound portion, but most airlines only bother with passengers who do this on a frequent basis.
Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.

Probably not even then. They may take actions against travel agents who seem to be advising people to do this.
  • if you dont take the outbound sector of your flight on BA I know it automatically cancels out the return leg...do not even attempt to do this because you will be denied boarding!!
  • ps they must be used to sequence that you bought them...you have a contract to fly a-b-a for example and not b-a-b
