XP Pro Upgrade problem

Just upgraded a new Dell PC from XP Home to XP Pro. No problems. Then tried to use same CD (it's a volume license) to upgrade an HP Pavilion laptop but it won't work. It just about completes the process of copying install files to the HD then comes up with an error saying that it couldn't copy a particular file because the file is missing. The name of the file changes. So get the same name for a few tries then changes to a different one. I haven't got a note of the actual file names but can run again if necessary to find out. But these names are a string of letters and numbers and end in .sys.

I've tried doing a search on google for those names and none of them is found. I''ve searched the CD and hard drive of both the new PC (with xp pro) and the laptop and it doesn't find anything with even remotely the same name. I tried copying the CD to the HD on the laptop. Same problem. Tried installing from the CD drive on the new PC (on which the upgrade was successful) by sharing the drive across the network; same problem. I tried removing one of the memory cards; same problem with both of them. Ran CHKDSK. No faults found.

Any suggestions short of a clean install?

Maybe do a repair on your laptop with the XP Home CD, and then try the upgrade to Pro?

When I try to do a repair on XP home using the original CD that came with the PC, I do the following:

    Boot from CD
    click [R]epair using recovery console
it asks me which Windows installation I would like to log onto. But there is only one option. I choose c:\windows

It asks me for the Administrator password. There isn't one so I just press [Enter]. I end up in the command prompt. What now?

Don't go the Recovery Console route. There is another option where it asks you if you want to install xp, say yes, then one of the options you will get is to 'repair an existing windows intallation', this is the one you want.
