Can't resist recommending Flatcaps coffee shop in Newcastle city centre, best coffee shop in the NE by far! :D It's a little tucked away place hidden in the basement below a shop, but the coffee and tea are amazing, the owner won the North East Barista Championship 2013! Some of the equipment he uses to make the coffee looks like it belongs in a science lab though, it's so technical and fun, love watching it being made :D

Thanks Kyrae. I'm intrigued! It looks so hidden away, although just a few minutes away from Northumberland St! We'll certainly seek it out next time we're shopping there. Fascinating, thanks again :)

  • I can recommend sugar loaf in Whitley bay, lovely place and its been around a good few years now.

Also the butter fly cabinet on heaton road, lovely cafe and the food is amazing and the portions are huge!

Thanks CSC21, I was in Whitley Bay during the week, will look out for it next time. Ended up at the fish and chip place on Blyth beach. Lovely meals that you can eat in or take away, followed by a huge choice of (I think) home made italian-style ice creams!

  • Went to the Running Fox, Felton yesterday..thanks sharnad, it was really lovely. Afternoon tea has gone up to £17.50 for two but still well worth the price. We booked and just as well as it was full. Gorgeous food, after the humungous slice of fully loaded steak pie I was full but still managed a tasty beef, stilton and salad sarnie and half a cream scone. The portions are massive but you are given a box to take home what you can't eat which is great. Will definitelybe returning.

Thanks for the update geordielass. Since it was recommended by sharnad we located the Running Fox but unfortunately it was closed at the time but we'll certainly try again.
Not strictly a coffee stop but I'd like to recommend the Prince Of Wales pub in Jarrow for an excellent choice of pub-style lunches and evening meals. One diner can have a choice of curries while others enjoy vegetarian, burgers, pies and many other traditional meals, followed by a large choice of desserts all at reasonable prices.
We've visited on a few occasions with mixed groups and everyone was very happy with their meals.
I have to add that the friendly and cheerful staff, especially Amy, helped to make our visit a real pleasure! (Not far from the Tyne Tunnel if anyone is passing through!)

I was wondering that too. I just had a look at their site to work that out and came across this quote on a poster:

    "Stressed is desserts spelt backwards."

what a great quote, complete with a lady holding a ....chocolate cake :)

As to the afternoon tea, it was £15 for two on the menu I checked out,(so maybe their online menu prices are out of date?) but qualifies , imho, as a full on lunch rather than afternoon tea. A sandwich AND a piece of pie or quiche AND a cake, AND a scone, not to mention unlimited tea or coffee. Sounds like a bargain. Maybe it's an afternoon tea for two, intended to be eaten by 4 to 5 people?:)
