Thanks for the replies. There are quite a few places that I haven't heard of and have lived in the North East all of my life. Please keep posting :)
I'm thinking of marking them on a map to keep in the car! Not very hitech eh? Maybe a list with the postcodes for the satnav might be better...
Today we've been to Tynemouth market, held in the lovely revamped Victorian railway/Metro Station (9-4 Saturdays and Sundays) I think that it's greatly improved, with lots of craft-y and foodie stalls as well as bric a brac, books etc. Well worth a visit.

  • Not strictly a coffee shop but Barter Books in Alnwick (Northumberland) is a great place to go. It's an old train station which has been converted to a second hand bookshop with a cafe and coffees cost about 60p in an honesty box. Pets are allowed inside too. There's also the Alnwick castle and gardens pretty much next to it (where Harry Potter was filmed) which is also a great day out.

Thanks EeViL_WeEvil I've been to Barter Books it is nice, even has the old-fashioned station toilets if I remember rightly :) I'll make sure we visit next time we're in Alnwick. Haven't been into Alnwick castle since going on a school trip many moons ago. It's very expensive since it's revamp isn't it though?
We visited a coffee shop in Galgate, Barnard Castle recently. Called No 3. (Almost on the corner, opposite the post office) Good food, clean premises and served with a smile. Heartily recommended. (We walked out of another cafe in Barnie because it seemed that we were invisible! :( )

Thanks mintymoneysaver, hadn't heard of them...will add them to my list :)
Been meaning to add Castaways Tea Shop at Seaton Sluice for some time. We've visited a few times and always found the food and service to be very good.
Plenty of nearby parking available. (We followed it with a walk along the coast to kid ourselves that we'd negated the lovely coffee and cakes!)

Not sure if it does coffee but http://www.quilliambrothers.com/ does nice tea, it's near the Haymarket in Newcastle.

Nice place inside and I like the handmade signs and things.

Thanks ohbilly, looks very interesting! Will give it a try next time we're in Newcastle :)
We've just been to Paxton House near Berwick. Georgian House with lots of Chippendale furniture and oil paintings on show. A lovely relaxed guided tour followed by a stroll around the extensive grounds. You can walk along the side of the river Tweed in England, looking at Scotland on the other bank. Of course, we followed the walk in the Stables tearoom with coffee and cake which was delicious.
The guide told us that, like a lot of other places, they need more visitors and I would heartily recommend it. Only 3 miles from the A1. :)

I'm not sure if you travel towards Northallerton but Roots Farm shop and cafe is always on my list

'Roots Farmshop & Cafe are part of a rural working dairy and arable farm just outside of East Rounton village near Northallerton, North Yorkshire, not far from the A19'

Sorry sharnad, missed your posting somehow! Will add Felton to my list, don't think that I've ever been there. Off to g**gle it now... :) (So handy, that street view isn't it?)
Same goes for your post s4mmy, how did I miss them? We often visit Northallerton (lots of nice charity shops in the main street!) will watch out for Roots next time thanks.
