Second chance offer and withdrawn bids

I hope somebody can help. Been bidding on an item that started at 99p. With 3 hours to go it was at £52. The highest bid matched mine at £75, but was placed earlier so won.

That bidder withdrew from the sale, and I was sent a second chance offer at £75. Surely this isn't right? Had the other bidder not bid the winning bid (mine) would have been closer to £55. I don't think there was shill bidding, but what should happen here?

Nothing really because with most items on ebay if that person had not bid to that amount then someone else would have done.

    That's evidently not true though!

To answer your specific question, yes that's exactly how a second chance offer works.

You are not of course obliged to accept it.

It is true in that prospective bidders would have been watching it and decided not to bid as it was already at or around what they would have liked to pay. What was it? A good way to know what it would usually sell for is to look at other listings for the same item

Ebay set the price - the seller has no control.

Accept or dont accept - you have two options.

If you were willing to pay that then - why not now?

Agree with others - had you not bid it so high - someone else might have joined in.

I bid 8 seconds before the end, when it was at £52.

I've accepted. It's a good price for the item, I just thought the process a bit odd and hadn't come across it before.

You might be right - and it does encourage shill bidding.
