15 years ago we took the train in the opposite direction, 2nd class was about 60 quid each IIRC. Really good journey, compartment to ourselves, staff excellent, tea brought in the morning, beds made up at night etc. A great way to see the country and get a feel for the size and remoteness. Would recommend it providing not too much has changed! The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0

Do you want a stopover in a third country, or simply within South Africa?0

We have decided on uk to Cape direct going and stoppping for a couple of days at Dubai on way back.
Where were you thinking of? We've ruled out Egypt due to unrest and I don't fancy Munich, but depending on cost I'm open to suggesstions?Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0

I was going to suggest Addis Ababa, but Ethiopian Airlines only go as far as JNB. You could get good and affordable flights there (changing 'planes in Addis) with a free stopover on the way back. A stopover on the outbound trip would cost about fifty pounds extra.
I'm not sure I understand your plan: if you stop in Dubai on the way back then presumably you will buy return tickets on Emirates, and so will need to change 'planes in Dubai on the way. That will significantly increase your journey time as compared to a direct flight.0

There are, unfortunately, no direct flights from Newcastle.
So on the way there we change planes in Dubai (3hr turn around) and on the way back we are staying in Dubai for 3 days.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0
