Calcified disc in dachshund

10 days ago my dachsund was displaying signs of disc problems. I took her to the vet last Thursday where she stayed for 2 days. She had a mylogram and i was told she had minor calcification of a disc. I have been told to crate her strictly for 6 weeks (which i intend to do)
Surgery is not necessary at the moment.

Has any one here gone through this with their dachsund (or other long backed breeds)?

Jill

Yep - Diego the Dorgi had back end paralysis in about November. Cage rest for a few weeks. After about a week we got a waggy tail again (yes, tears were shed) then after another 2 weeks or so he started to try to "push-up" and wobbly walked about a week later. Still not 100% but can walk, run & fight with the others.
Have you to "towel" him to toilet him? We cut a bath sheet into about 4 inch strips which gave enough support for Diego but wasn't straining our backs and was comfortable to hold in a hand.
FB & website "Dodgerslist" is a godsend. Get on it now & look at the info - gives you cage rest details as well.
All the best. It's hard work but worth it.
Any questions, please ask......I'm no expert but have been there

I hope your dog is feeling better soon, it is so hard to see them in pain. It sounds promising that just rest is required.

My greyhound is recovering from a disc problem, as she seemed much better after the medication no further investigation was done by the orthopaedic specialist vet so not sure exactly what the issue was. She had crate rest for 4 weeks, it was hard to keep her from looning about and jumping on the sofas if let out as she felt fine due to the meds. Being a greyhound lounging all day isn't much of a hardship.

Then we started restricted exercise to gradually build her back up to strength and she's doing well at the moment with no meds and up to nearly 20 mins of walking 3 times a day.

Hi thanks for your replies. Sadie was only 'down' on one leg for a couple of hours at the most. By the time we got to the vets she was standing again. I have put the cage where her basket used to be (next to the radiator) so to her it doesn't seem a lot has changed.

  • So glad to hear she's doing okay. I'm a dog person but neverhad a dachshund before, however, my friend does. Her dog suffered from a spinalinjury and was paralysed – poor girl was dragging her back legs when trying towalk L.

She went to a canine hydrotherapy centre first and then asthis was quite expensive, my friend bought a life jacket from ebay for around£20.00. She then swum her in the bath and continues doing this even now - somethree years on.

Betsy is totally back to normal now and has a little blastwith my dogs every now and then. I did see a harness from a company calledDogaids that might be suitable for your dog. It was on a Daily Mail article andgood news is that they are based in the UK. There’s also another one fromAmerica called the helpemup harness which is cheaper. This could also be idealfor your dog but i don’t think they have adjustable handles from what I saw onthe pictures.
