Counter Cheque

hi sorry if this is in the wrong section

But my husband went to his bank today and got a counter cheque (as his bank didnt send him a chequebook).

On the counter cheque has the name of the company that it is being paid to.
However the next day we found out that the company has already been paid,so we don't have to send them any money.
Can he go back into his bank,give them back the cheque and have the funds put back into his account? or does the cheque have to be cashed by the company?
I take it a counter cheque works the same as cash and theres no way to cancel it like a normal personal cheque?

Take it to the bank

And it will be canceled and re-credited back to his account

Which bank was it btw?

thanks basfordlad, the bank is santander. is that a bad thing?
(I've had a lot of problems with them past few days regarding other issues!)
