    OK .

Which is best a slick or semi slick tyre or are they in reality both the same ?

    on a 26" rim?
well theres no 'best' its always a compromise
a slick tyre is much faster rolling but sacrifices grip and often comfort vs a knobbly tyre
from slick to knobbly you have degrees of grip vs easer rolling etc
you also have price and what you use the tyre to consider

Are you currently running an MTB as a commuter? is it all on road and all weathers?

So you need 26" and ~1.5" width
wider will give more comfort but be a bit slower, as already said, it's a compromise
Maybe look at something like Specialized Nimbus Armadillos

    or Continental Gator skins

If you just want cheap budget commuter tyres
    Schwalbe City Jets maybe?

I'm sure i read somewhere that tread on a cycle tyre ( road) is cosmetic and has no effect on grip levels in the wet, but has a slight effect on comfort..
Tread is there to prevent hydroplaning which is irrelevant to cycles
  • I've a set of these on my hybrid, done about 5,000 miles on them and not finished yet, not quite a handful of punctures in that time (2 or 3 perhaps)

I think there is no clarity in question.
But my normal view on usage of cycle is i think it is the best means of transport. No pollution and good for health.
One funny thing I abserved now is all stopped using bicycle for means of transport but they are using for their body fitness.
