Bicycle Rims

Sorry if this sounds a dumb question but i am new to cycling

Are 26 inch MTB tires the same size as 700c tires ?

You called your thread bicycle rims - now if your question is about changing the size of tyre/tubes you use then yes this can be possible, as I have done it myself recently.

There is a chart near the bottom of this page http://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html which gives details on how much you can change your tyre widths depending on the rim size. Alternatively have a chat with your local bike shop.

They definitely aren't the same thing Donoway and it's not a dumb question. There is a bizarre range of sizing ranges. In general 700 are found on road bikes. 26 on mountain bikes. Even this isn't a rule. Generally 26 followed by a decimal width is for a mountain bike, followed by a fraction is not, even if the fraction equals the decimal.
Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc
  • They aren't the same. 26" is the size of mountain bike tyres and refers to the circumference. Road bikes are sized in mm, which is what the 700c refers to (about 27"). The other number on the tyre will be the width (26x1.5, or 700x23) with the mountain bike tyre being in inches and the road bike in mm.

You can get slick 26" tyres and knobbly 700c's, so whatever you want to do is likely to be possible somehow, but you can't just fit road tyres on a mountain bike.
    It's only numbers.

26" is the diameter not circumference - mostly for mountain /hybrid bikes, 700 (mm) diameter mostly for road bikes

    Obviously! Doh.

I really should read things back before hitting 'submit'!

To make it even more confusing, a 26" bike rim is only ~22" diameter. The 26" refers to it after having a 2" high tyre fitted and the complete tyre and wheel measured.
