Destroying a computer...

Hey hey.

Someone told me he was going to destroy all the hardware in my computer when I was out (having probs with a flat mate lol)...

How easy is it to do that? As in what is he going to do to do that without leaving a trace which can then be used by the police?

I understand things like static will destroy a machine but not everything in it :s

If you have a voice recorder on your mobile or something like that then next time you have a conversation with the person record it as evidence.

Static can damage components but you would have to open up the computer and mess around with it to create a static shock that is enough to damage the computer and normally its not easy to do.

I am an ICT Tech' in a school, and we sometimes have computers or printers with faults which aren't covered by the warranty. We have found that standing at the top of a flight of stairs and dropping it achieves the required standard of damage.

PS. This might also work with your flatmate. We are available, used banknotes only ...

So there isn't an easy way to do it then? Good good. He made it sound like he knows a way already and static would seem not a 100% way...

Hes the type of guy that says a lot of BS so I just want to know how seriously to take the thread haha.

How would a magnet do it? surely that would just destroy the hard drives?

As the data on a hard disc is stored electromagnetically, then having other magnets close to them is probably not a good idea.

A discharge of static electricity can damage the surface of a microchips circuitry, but I've never managed to do anything by not wearing my wrist-strap yet.

Why don't you just beat the crap out of him in advance? Im sure as hell i wouldn't have someone threaten me like that.

In response though, he can destroy your harddisk with a large electromagnet. Our work uses some noisy machine that they place a harrdisk into, which wipes it blank. They also drill a hole through the disk to make sure it can't be re-used.

But in reality, if someone wanted to destroy your PC, squirting water into the PSU fan would probably do the trick - depending on how far they wanted to go.

P.s. I don't think that recorded audio is admissable evidence in court.

p.p.s. I agree with Stephen.... i've never worn anti-static measures while working on a PC, and have had no problems in 20 years or so.

I'm not a fighting guy. I live with my girlfriend and a few other students... The girly doesnt want any fighting or anything of course.

Moving out in 3 weeks but a bit worried about what the 3 weeks is going to be like with him being like this, and to be 100% honest, i have NO idea what to do.

Though I am confident he wont destory the pc as to be frank, he's a dumbass and wouldnt understand about electromagnets etc etc...

make sure your room is locked...

I was going to say, can your room be locked? In the past I've been quite lucky with housemates but I still tended to lock my room for insurance reasons and I've occasionally had one or two housemates with very dodgy friends.

As mentioned a strong magnet is the obvious option for corrupting data. And something simple like snapping out a capacitor might be tricky to notice that its happened, but I wouldn't worry too much.

    1) Make sure you lock your room whenever possible
    2) Make sure you are insured
    3) Avoid him and any confrontation till you move out. Then once you have egg his windows :) or maybe hide a fish under the floorboards in his room on the last day :)
