Because food hygiene is so important, I would be very concerned about her doing this unassisted as it requires understanding about different type of contamination, pests and bacteria.

It's the translation that's likely to be an issue, more than the actual understanding. I'm thinking now that an online course she can do at her own pace (translating stuff as she goes), might be a good thing to do prior to a 1 day course.
The multiple choice test at the end of the day is available, through prior arrangement in many different languages. The day of training however, will usually be in English.

    Thanks, that's useful to know.
  • I wonder if a college would be able to supply the materials and test in her mother language? Worth asking.

I'll check it out. It'll do no harm to be learning the English anyway though. Cheers.

We're in Scotland and the local college (and most others in Scotland) seem to be offering the REHIS Elementary Food Hygiene Certificate. I don't see any online versions of this anyway from a quick Google.

Because labels & instructions will be in English, the training will be in English. The test, however, can be in many languages as it is testing the understanding rather than teaching information. For example, a label may be shown with English writing, as it would be in the kitchen but the question about it may be in Latvian or Urdu.

This looks like what you're talking about sjs:

A good level of language comprehension is required. Additionally, course materials and exam papers are available in a number languages:

Bengali, Chinese (trad.), Chinese (simplified), Hindi, Polish, Punjabi, Russian, Slovakian, Spanish, Thai, Urdu.
  • Totally missed the Scotland part, the rules may be different there, I am based in England, most education/funding rules are! Looks about the same though.

Yes, I'm on my third one having worked in catering/hospitality for 14 years.

Don't buy the online one, they're worthless. Go to a college for a day's training, and get a certificate recognised by Environmental Health.

That's not true. My current Food Safety certificate I obtained online and it's just as valid as my previous certificates from classroom learning. The only difference is that I didn't get the interraction with other students and the tutor which you obviously get in a classroom.

I took my course with Train4Food which is a website run by exactly the same people as in the link provided by TCA. It's CIEH approved, indeed I found the site in the first place by following a link from CIEH'S own website. The price I paid was also the same - £29 + VAT - so it's probably the same course.

It was a four hour course with a test at the end. The pass mark was slightly higher than with my previous tests at 23 out of 30 but, as I'm sure you'd agree, you'd have to be pretty daft to fail. If/when you pass there is a downloadable certificate in PDF format which can be printed off.

I thought it was a good course and I would recommend it. It was also useful to learn that the guidance on food core temperatures had changed.
